The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay Transport Partnership (SmartWay) is a voluntary program of government and the freight transportation industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

The basic features of SmartWay include:

Partners – SmartWay Partners are carriers, shippers and logistics companies that commit to implementing best environmental practices and fuel-saving technologies.

Affiliates – SmartWay Affiliates are suppliers and other entities that enable SmartWay Partners to fulfill their commitments.

Evaluation factors – Fuel-saving technologies are evaluated under SmartWay based on a variety of factors, including test data, product specifications and commercial availability.

Certified – OEM tractors and trailers can qualify for the label of U.S. EPA Certified SmartWay.

Verified – Components, such as aerodynamic devices, can qualify for listing as U.S. EPA Verified Technologies (and are sometimes referred to as SmartWay-approved).

SAE J1321 – Verification requires that components be tested in accordance with a modified version of SAE J1321 test protocol.

Aerodynamic Devices – Aerodynamic devices that qualify as U.S. EPA Verified Technologies are divided into categories based on the trailer region they address and the extent of their estimated fuel savings. The two categories that feature the highest estimated fuel savings, at least 5%, are Advanced Trailer Skirts and Advanced Trailer End Fairings.

Financing – U.S. EPA Verified Technologies are eligible for special loan and lease programs.

Funding eligibility – In order to be eligible for grant funding under the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA), aerodynamic devices must be listed as U.S. EPA Verified Technologies.

U.S. EPA Verified Technologies offered by ATDynamics include ATD-Transtex Skirts which are categorized as Advanced Trailer Skirts, and the TrailerTail®, which is categorized as an Advanced Trailer End Fairing. ATDynamics is a SmartWay Affiliate
